Description

Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions is a quick and flavorful dish combining tender beef, aromatic black pepper, and sweet onions. Perfect for weeknights, this restaurant-quality Chinese recipe delivers bold flavors and satisfying textures, making it an ideal addition to your homemade Chinese food collection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced into strips
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional for flavor)
  • Chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Start by thinly slicing the beef against the grain. Marinate with 1 tablespoon soy sauce and black pepper for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Slice the onion into thin strips and mince the garlic.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add beef and cook until browned, about 2–3 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  4. Add another tablespoon of oil if needed. Sauté onions and garlic until onions are soft and caramelized, about 3–4 minutes.
  5. Return beef to skillet. Add oyster sauce, soy sauce, black pepper, and sesame oil if using. Stir well and cook for another 2 minutes. For a thicker sauce, dissolve cornstarch in water and add, simmering until thickened.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add sliced bell peppers or chili flakes during cooking.
  • You can substitute soy sauce with tamari for a gluten-free version.
  • Use leaner cuts like sirloin or flank for a healthier option.
  • Reheat leftovers gently to preserve tenderness.
