- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp butter, melted
- 8 mozzarella cheese sticks or fresh mozzarella, cut into strips
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 6 cups water (for boiling)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Coarse salt or pretzel salt, for topping
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough
- In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add flour, salt, and melted butter, mixing until a dough forms.
- Knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
2. Shape and Fill the Pretzels
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Divide dough into 8 equal portions.
- Roll each piece into a rope, flatten slightly, and place a mozzarella stick in the center.
- Seal the dough around the cheese and shape into a traditional pretzel or a simple twist.
3. Boil the Pretzels
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda.
- Dip each pretzel into the boiling water for 20–30 seconds, then place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
4. Bake the Pretzels
- Brush pretzels with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Bake for 15–18 minutes or until golden brown.
5. Serve and Enjoy
- Let cool slightly before serving.
- Enjoy with marinara sauce, mustard, or garlic butter
