Description
Mozzarella en Carrozza is a crispy, golden Italian fried mozzarella sandwich with a gooey center. This classic Neapolitan dish is perfect as a snack, appetizer, or light meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 slices white sandwich bread
- 8 oz mozzarella cheese, sliced
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Optional: Anchovies, ham, pesto, or fresh basil
Instructions
- Prepare the bread and mozzarella: Cut the mozzarella into slices that fit within the bread slices. If using fresh mozzarella, pat it dry to prevent excess moisture.
- Assemble the sandwich: Place mozzarella slices between two pieces of bread. If desired, add extra fillings such as anchovies or ham.
- Trim the edges: To ensure the sandwich seals properly, trim off the crusts and gently press the edges together.
- Prepare the dredging station: In one shallow dish, mix the eggs with milk and a pinch of salt. In another, place the flour, and in a third, spread out the breadcrumbs.
- Coat the sandwiches: Lightly dust each sandwich with flour, ensuring full coverage. Dip into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then coat thoroughly with breadcrumbs.
- Chill for 10-15 minutes: This helps the coating adhere and prevents it from breaking apart while frying.
- Heat the oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet or frying pan and heat to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the sandwiches: Carefully place the sandwiches in the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Drain and serve: Remove from the oil and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with marinara sauce or a simple salad.
Notes
- Spicy kick: Add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes or a slice of spicy salami.
- Herbaceous touch: Incorporate fresh basil or a spread of pesto for added aroma.
- Gluten-free option: Use gluten-free bread and breadcrumbs.
- Extra crispy texture: Double coat with an extra dip in the egg and breadcrumbs for a thicker crust.
