Description

Discover the rich, creamy flavors of our Authentic Indian Butter Chicken Recipe, the perfect comfort food that combines tender chicken with a luscious spice-infused tomato sauce. This step-by-step guide will help you master this beloved Indian classic in your own kitchen for a satisfying and flavorful meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 700g boneless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup heavy cream or coconut cream
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, garam masala, ground cumin, turmeric, chili powder, and coriander. Add chicken pieces and coat well. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or overnight for maximum flavor.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add marinated chicken and cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add remaining butter. Sauté chopped onion until translucent. Stir in garlic and ginger, cooking for another minute until fragrant. Pour in crushed tomatoes and simmer for 10-15 minutes until thickened.
  4. Add cooked chicken back into the sauce. Stir in heavy cream or coconut cream. Simmer for 5 minutes and season with salt to taste. Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.

Notes

  • Marinate the chicken overnight for deeper flavor and more tender meat.
  • Adjust spice levels depending on your heat preference by adding more or less chili powder.
  • For a smoky flavor, grill the marinated chicken before adding it to the sauce.
  • Use fresh herbs and ingredients for optimal freshness and flavor.
  • Serve with basmati rice and naan bread for a complete meal.
